Don't Be a Bandwagon Christian

A bandwagon fan is one who only supports a team when it is winning. A bandwagon Christian is one who only lives for Christ as long as it costs him little to nothing. Really, using the word Christian in this way is an oxymoron. Jesus spoke to this in the parable of the soils.

The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away (Matthew 13:20-21).

Annanis and Saphria might be good examples of bandwagoneers. It seems they wanted to appear like other Christians who were selling off their properties and giving it to the apostles to be distributed to those who had need. Only they kept back some of the money from the sale and yet presented it as the whole amount.

But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land? "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God(Acts 5:3-4).

Annanis and his wife climbing on the bandwagon cost them their lives. It could be that God judged these two so quickly because it happened in the early, tender stages of the Church. Nevertheless, let us take heed not to practice any hypocrisy before God knowing that nothing is hidden from His eyes.

Now [concerning your giving] this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).

Heavenly Father, be merciful to us when we fail. Amen.
