Can You See His Glory?
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth (John 1:14 NAS95).
Nicodemus was told, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3b). That is, you must have your spiritual blinders removed by regeneration. This is true because the Gospel is veiled to those who are perishing, in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Corinthians 4:3b-4).
Is this not what John is referring to when he says “full of grace and truth”? John was indeed present at the Mount of Transfiguration. However, the glory John speaks of is more than the brilliance seen on that glorious occasion. It is the grace and truth of the Father manifested in Christ.
This seems to bear true as Isaiah testifies, For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him (Isaiah 53:2 NAS95). John saw no heavenly appearance in Christ's manhood, but, OH, what glorious character!
Have you seen it? Can you see it? Read the Gospels and you may. The Godman walked this earth in perfection. From the lips of Christ Himself, the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM (Luke 7:22b NAS95). Christ's glory could be seen in what He did. Not only that.
Christ's glory can be seen in Who He was. We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. We love, because He first loved us (1 John 4:16-19 NAS95).
The glory of Christ shines forth from His person, full of grace and truth. Oh, how He loved you and me! See His glory by faith, and someday you will see it in person. For God, who said, "Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6 NAS95).
