Commit Your Spirit to God
Has your life taken a turn for the worse? Do you sometimes feel trapped by your circumstances? Are your foes more clever and sinister than you ever thought possible? David felt that pressure when he penned this Psalm.
In You, O LORD, I have taken refuge; Let me never be ashamed; In Your righteousness deliver me. Incline Your ear to me, rescue me quickly; Be to me a rock of strength, A stronghold to save me. For You are my rock and my fortress; For Your name's sake, You will lead me and guide me. You will pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have ransomed me, O LORD, God of truth (Psa 31:1-5 NAS95).
David declares that he is taking refuge in God. David’s plea for help likely made him vulnerable to mockery from his oppressors should God not deliver him. Therefore, he asked that he may never be ashamed. He appeals to God’s righteousness, knowing God is just. He also asks for a quick delivery.
When the stress of life is mounting, run to the Lord for help. Let the Lord be your Rock and Fortress. David knows He can trust God to guide and lead him. He can trust God to pull him out of the net.
Why does David have this confidence? It is because he has committed his spirit into God’s hands, and he knows God has ransomed him.
In faith, David is asking God for help. James tells us that those cries for help must be done in faith. Listen to what he says about trials.
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways (Jas 1:2-8 NAS95) [Emphasis Added].
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths (Pro 3:5-6 KJV).
