“A Maskil of Asaph. Listen, O my people, to my instruction; Incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old, Which we have heard and known, And our fathers have told us. We will not conceal them from their children, But tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, And His strength and His wondrous works that He has done” (Psa 78:1-4, NAS95).
Do you speak of the great things God has done in your life? People often struggle with evangelism as it can seem too confrontational. That is no excuse to avoid evangelism. However, speaking to others about the blessings God has provided for you and your family is a powerful testimony and a potential door-opener.
Instead of asking a person a hypothetical that will never happen, like: “What would you say to God if He asked you why He should let you into His heaven?” Just share a brief version of your salvation testimony. Or, share how God taught you something about yourself. The point is, at least try to be relatable and compassionate.
Too often we approach evangelism like a quota to be filled. It can become a source of pride rather than a loving endeavor.
I mean, think about one of the best-known passages in all of Scripture. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (Jhn 3:16, NAS95). God so loved the world!
Let us love the world. Remember the second greatest commandment? “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
I had a bout with cancer recently; all is well now, but during those dark hours in the hospital I came face to face with my own mortality. Jesus comforted my fears as Scripture promised.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Php 4:6-7, NAS95).
Beyond the peace I received, my heart overflowed with thankfulness. This thankfulness turned into boldness. Then opportunities were everywhere. I could relate how God filled my heart with peace.
Surely, God has done great things in your life. He saved you for one. Are you thankful? He laid down His life for you. Won’t you share that with others?
Father, give us boldness to speak as we should. Help us to love our neighbors. Please open doors for us to share what great things You have done for You deserve the glory.
