“No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.” (John 6:44)
Here is one of the deepest truths of Scripture. It is not popular because man is basically prideful. We all want to feel like we are in control of our lives. However, the Scriptures are clear that salvation is ultimately in God’s hands. Unless the Father draws a person, no man will come to him. Some may come to a church, but only God’s elect will be saved.
Man is corrupt through and through. “Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.” (Eph 4:18) This is true of all men because all are born in a state of corruption. “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.” (Ps 51:5 NKJV)
However, you may find that your experience seems to contradict this truth. Looking back at things you may find evidence of your seeking God. I assure you this pursuit did not begin with you. That doesn’t mean that your will was not involved at all in salvation for the passage says no one can come unless drawn. Coming and drawing implies that the will of man is involved at some level.
However, left alone without God’s intervention no one would seek God. “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.” (Ro 3:10-11 AV) The sin nature completely dominates an unregenerate man so that he will always choose to serve himself and not God. Only when God sends His Holy Spirit to quicken a man will he be drawn to Christ.
Do not fight against this truth, but embrace it as it puts God in His proper place and you humbly at His mercy. This should be your attitude. Praise God that He saw fit to call you and me from the corruption of sin, and to set us free. Without this understanding you will never come to be truly thankful.
Have you been, or are you being drawn? If so, you will see your sinfulness. You will see how desperately you need a Savior. Read the following quote by Pink on the subject passage. “But in the clear light of John 6:44 we must assure you, dear reader, that if you found ‘coming to Christ’ to be easy, then it is proof you have never come to Him at all in a spiritual and saving way.” He makes this strong statement “Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” (Ro 8:7 AV) A man must be broken, and made to see his depravity before he will ever reach out to the Savior.
Father, we are thankful that you choose to set your love upon us. You called us out of the corruption in which we all were enslaved. Lord, have mercy on our loved ones, friends, and family members. Continue to call men from all parts of the world, and make each of us a part of that work, amen.
