A Better Understanding of the Lord’s Love

Scripture

“And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things [are] naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we [must give] account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast [our] confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all [points] tempted as [we are, yet] without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:13-16 NKJV)

Commentary

I had to take my son to the dentist yesterday morning. He has braces, and there were a couple of baby teeth that needed to be extracted so the orthodontist could close the gap where these baby teeth would eventually fall out if not removed. I purposely didn’t tell him when his appointment was because I didn’t want him to worry about it for several days unnecessarily.

When I finally had to tell him, I knew fear was beginning to gnaw at him from the barrage of questions he had about the procedure. One definition of courage is to do what is right even though you are afraid. So, don’t get me wrong, he really was a brave little boy, but fear had its grip.

I wanted so much to take away his fear and to comfort him somehow. My heart actually hurt as I thought about similar situations in my life and revisited the fear he was now enduring. This experience made me think about the passage above. It says, “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses.”

Beyond the physical scarring that Jesus endured for us, He also endured temptations. He was without sin, but the temptations were real. He knows what we face day by day, and gives us a remedy for our trials.

“Let us come boldly to the throne of grace.” Have no fear and no reservations about confession and supplications. He bids us to come “that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

God wants to be our comforter. I caught a little of His heart in my experience on the way to the dentist. How loving and compassionate He is.

Meditate upon His great love for you, and take advantage of the comfort He has made available through prayer. Come boldly to the throne of grace.
